It must have been hundreds of years later when, one evening, we were pulled out again. It was dark, and we were thrown onto the dirt floor. We found ourselves in a simple home with walls of clay mixed with straw. There was a nervous excitement in the room. I saw a mother rolling up a sleeping mat and a six-year-old boy with a piece of bread in his hand.

“Why is the bread so flat, Mom?” he grumbled.

“Because there’s no time to let it rise, Simi. I explained that to you. Keep eating. Haven’t you put your shoes on yet?”

“I don’t like flat bread.”

“You’d better eat it anyway, because we’re going to leave right away, to go back to Canaan—the land your grandma told you about so many times. The land where everyone drinks milk every day, where you can dip your bread into honey and drink wine with every meal. The land that the Lord, may his name be praised, promised to our ancestors.”

“Will Pharaoh allow that? Because he is very cruel, right? You yourselves told me so.”

“The Lord is going to ensure that we’re allowed to leave. He’s going to set us free. Keep eating.”

I watched as a man came into the house and lifted a package from the floor.

“Hosea,” said the woman. “How are we going to manage with that tent? It’s way too heavy for us, and we have to take the rest of our belongings and food for on the way.”

“No problem, we have an ox.”

“What’re you saying? Since when do we have an ox?”

The man laughed. “Since about a half an hour ago. We got it from the people across the way.”

“What?”

“Look, they’ve given us all their necklaces and rings to take along, with the request that we would leave, please. They’re scared to death of us after what happened last night. Pharaoh himself begged us to leave.”

We left in the middle of the night strapped to the back of an ox, together with a large group of people and cattle. Gradually we found out what had happened. Egypt, the land that had been a place of safety for us and where the family of Jacob was able to grow into a people, had become a prison. Pharaoh had come to see the refugees as a threat, and he’d taken harsh measures. He’d forced the men to serve him as slaves and had ordered all newborn boys to be killed.

Without us realizing it, the family of Abraham had once again been threatened with extinction. They narrowly escaped, as we heard, by the intervention of the Creator himself.
